Today we celebrated the end of the year with a class party. Fristly we played a game called "Santa Hats." Then we ate the savoury food. After that, we got to eat the sweet food. At the end, we had a dance party. We did Christmas carols, the Macarina and the YMCA. We had so much fun!
First we went into groups with the grade 2s. Then we played lots of different sports. There was lots to do: the vortex, skipping, basketball, parachute, hurdles, egg and spoon races, 3 legged race and circus tricks.
After we played sports we got a delicious barbeque dinner! We also got ice-creams for dessert!
We would like to thank all the parents who helped out.
1H and Rolling Hills Primary School were having a fun Carols Night at school.
First we heard the Foundation students singing Jingle Bells and Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. The choir sang too.
We felt very excited when we did our songs. Our songs were Let's Make Santa Claus Happy Tonight and We Wish You a Merry Chistmas. We sang with 1A too. Some of us were nervous. We had to wear some of the 5 Christmas colours. We looked cheerful.
We are so excited to be starting our Inquiry project. We need to build a toy and get materials to build it. Our toy has to show what we know about movement, light or sound.
For our Inquiry, we need our parents to help us if we can't find the things we need at school.
We look forwrds to sharing our toys with you soon.
What toy are you planning to make? What materials do you need?
Yesterday we did a lesson called "Technology of Toys."
First Liz showed us some toys from the olden days. They were mostly made out of wood.
We sat in a circle and looked at different plastic toys. We worked out what was inside to help it move.
Then we looked at how to make our own sound toy. We used a cup, a string, masking tape and water to make strange sounds. Some made an elephant sound, others sounded like horses, seals, dolphins or chickens.
Next, we made a moving toy with elastic bands, a tube, a popstick and a toothpick. You have to hold the toothpick end and twist the other end. Once it is wound up, it will spin by itself.
Yesterday Grade 1H went into the Life Education Van. We met Kathy who taught us about choosing healthy food to pack in our bags. We know that a healthy snack will give us long lasting energy. Sugary foods give us short lasting engergy.
We also saw where all the body parts in the body are and they lit up on the diagram.
We went for a ride with Harold on the bus and found out what to do when we see something dangerous.
Just before we went, Alexis was asked to collect our stickers from Harold. Harold gave her a big kiss!
What was your favourite part of the Life Education Van lesson?
On Thursday the 18th of September we went to the "Kew Traffic School." We were so excited that the bus ride went really quickly! When we got there, Jenni taught us about all of the road signs so that we could navigate the roads safely. We learned that we must sit in the back of the car and use a booster seat to be safe.
We also learned about how to put our helmets on correctly. There should be two fingers between your eyebrows and the helmet so that it covers your head. Then you have to adjust the side buckles so that they sit under your ears. The best test is to shake your head - the helmet should not move at all!
We started with a walk around the roads to practise crossing the roads safely. We had to "Stop, Look, Listen and Think." We now understand that even though cross with a supervisor or at the traffic lights, we should still always be careful.
Fianlly it was time to choose a bike and practise our driving skills! Most of us were very responsible when it came to obeying the traffic lights, but the give way signs and the round-about proved to be a bit tricky!
We all had a lot of fun. Best of all there were no accidents! Well done 1H for being safe and responsible road users! What was the most interesting thing you learned at the Kew Traffic School?
Last week was Literacy and Numeracy week. We did a cool door display for visitors to see to see which favourite books we reviewed. We invited our Grandparents along to the classroom.
First we read them a book and then wrote a summary of it. Next we played spelling and word games with them. Miss Hailey read the 'Shhhh' book because it is our favourite!
We felt really happy becuase our Grandparents and special friends got to see what we do at school. What did your Grandparents think about their special morning? We would love your comments below!
This week in Maths we have been learning about repeating and growing patterns.
Sarah said, "We are finding the growing pattern." "A growing pattern is when the numbers get bigger," said Alex. "We are learning to label patterns with the letters ABC," said Charlotte. Can you guess the secret rule for the repeating poeple patterns below? Can you find any patterns around your house? Press on the blue "Comments" button to share your ideas with us!
We have been learning about Take Away! (Subtraction) Here is what we know: "The first number has to be the biggest." - Lacie "The middle number and the answer is always smaller." - Michael "You can't do 3 from 16 because there's not enough." - Jett "One strategy is to use number lines to jump backwards." - Hannah "We can count back using our fingers." - Lachlan "If you're taking away a teen number, you can do a big jump back by ten and then do the ones." - Paige
Can you make a take away story at home? Share it in the comments below!
Today we got to do lots of experiments with our visitor Angela in the Boorai building. First we "observed" lots of different liquids in test tubes and talked about how they are different. After that we looked at how food dye moves in water. We discovered that we can change the way it moves by adding salt or bubbles. Everyone's favourite part was when Anegla mixed two chemicals together to make smoke and fire! Last of all we mixed lots of different liquids and watched them change colours! We all loved practising our Science skills of predicting, observing and explaining. Miss Hailey's challenge: When might you use Science at your house? What do you guess and check? What changes do you make when you heat or cool your food? What things do you mix together to make something new?
"Goupss Of" is a way to add things quickly! All the groups have to be equal (the same). We have been using these thinking strategies: - count by 2s, 5s or 10s. - count on - doubles We made groups of numbers with things from around the room. Here are some photos.
It was Athletics Day today. We went to the Croydon Athletics track by bus. We played lots of activities. The first one was hurdles. We had to jump over them and some people knocked them over. Next was tunnel ball. We played in house teams.
Then we ran our relay races. We used "butterfuly hands" to catch the baton.
We threw the vortexes.
Our second last activity was the 100m sprint. Most of us liked this the best!
We finished the day by having a big jump into the long jump pit!

Thank you to the parents who came along to help or cheer us on! Please post below and write about your favourite part of the day!
We have been learning to count on with our fingers. We made bracelets and added up the beads. We learned the "Friends of Ten" song. The friends of ten are: 10 + 0 = 10 9 + 1 = 10 8 + 2 = 10 7 + 3 = 10 6 + 4 = 10 5 + 5 = 10 We also learned that the numbers can go different ways around and still make ten ( 4 + 6 = 10 and 6 + 4 = 10 ). We call these "turn arounds." Here are more photos of us adding. We used dominoes and a dice game to practise.
It's great to have our first online learning space! What would you like to see on our website? Please note that all posts are reviewed before they can be seen on our site.
